More than 350 finalists in the 2017 Canon Media Awards have been announced today. The list of finalists in 69 categories, can be viewed at canonmediaawards.co.nz/winners-finalists/2017-finalists.
Nearly 60 judges from New Zealand, Australia, UK and America have worked in pairs for weeks to choose winners and finalists from thousands of individual pieces of work – news stories, features, columns, reviews, editorials, blogs, photographs, videos, graphics and artwork, magazines and newspapers.
Awards director Jane Phare said judges struggled at times to select winners from an outstanding selection of work. In some cases, where the decision was close, a runner-up has been awarded.
Entries to the awards hit a new record this year – 2174, a 35% increase on last year. Judges reported that, for the most part, the standard of entries was extremely high.
The list of judges and their bios can be seen at canonmediaawards.co.nz/2017-judges.
The awards, staged by the Newspaper Publishers’ Association and sponsored by Canon New Zealand, will culminate in a gala dinner on Friday, May 19, at The Langham in Auckland. Tickets can be ordered for $170 (including gst) online at canonmediaawards.co.nz/awards/gala-dinner-tickets.
