Please see below today's release announcing finalists in this year's Canon Media Awards.
Finalists for the 2014 Canon Media Awards have been announced today and the full list can be seen at www.canonmediaawards.co.nz.
From the 190 finalists, winners of 66 categories spanning newspapers, magazines and digital media will be announced at the awards presentation in Auckland on the evening of Friday, May 9. Tickets are now on sale.
This year – the 40th year of national journalism awards – the organisers received a record 1687 entries, a 21 percent jump on the previous year’s total which was itself a record.
Award highlights will include the Canon Newspaper of the Year, Newsstand Magazine of the Year and Best Website, along with awards for the year’s best work from reporters, writers, web editors, photographers, columnists and cartoonists.
The finalists and winners were selected by 37 judges from four countries. More than half the judges are current or former editors of metropolitan or regional daily newspapers, news services, national magazines and television newsrooms.
The awards are owned and managed by the Newspaper Publishers’ Association (NPA) with Canon NZ as naming rights sponsor. NPA editorial director Rick Neville said the massive number of entries indicated a high level of enthusiasm and competitive spirit among New Zealand’s journalists and media.
“Right across all the strands of journalism – whether it be editing, reporting the news, writing features, columns, reviews, blogs, sketching artwork or a cartoon, or taking photos and videos – there’s great interest in being part of these annual awards.”
He said the number of entries imposed a significant burden on judges who had had to devote many hours to their tasks.
“The judges, most of whom are busy professionals, willingly give up their time in the interests of recognising and showcasing great journalism which is what the awards are all about.”
Last year’s awards attracted an attendance of close to 500 and similar numbers are expected this year. The event doubles as the country’s only national reunion of journalists and other media people.
This year, the function will offer lively entertainment plus new ‘best dressed’ awards to be judged by fashion designer Natalie Chan.
