Five weeks before the event is due to be held, tickets have sold out for the 2016 Canon Media Awards.
The annual awards dinner is being staged at Te Papa in Wellington on Friday, May 20. This will be the first time the awards have returned to Wellington since 2009.
Now in their 42nd year, they are put on by the Newspaper Publishers’ Association. The awards are open to newspaper, magazine and digital journalism and this year have attracted a massive 1603 entries.
NPA editorial director Rick Neville says demand for tickets has been unprecedented.
“We thought we’d get 350 - 400 but we’re well over that – with five weeks to go.”
The NPA has been discussing with Te Papa ways to increase seats and the table plan has been changed to accommodate 460.
“It will be a squeeze but that’s better than turning a lot of people away.”
