Nearly 1600 entries have been received for this year’s Canon Media Awards, similar to last year’s record total.
The high level of interest is seen across all 64 categories, says Newspaper Publishers’ Association editorial director Rick Neville, with photography showing the biggest growth – entries up 19 percent to 395 across eight categories.
Reporting is also strongly contested with 366 entries chasing 13 category awards; 93 entries have come in for Best Columnist while 201 entries are competing for 10 magazine awards.
In the digital awards, 26 each have been received for Blogger of the Year and Best Video.
This year’s awards will be dedicated to media freedom and honouring the memories of journalists killed or injured doing their job. They will also mark the 175th anniversary of the first printing of a newspaper in New Zealand (the New Zealand Gazette in Lower Hutt in 1840).
Managed by the Newspaper Publishers’ Association, the awards’ sponsors include Canon NZ, Bauer Media, Google, Norske Skog, Seafood New Zealand, the Cartoon Archive, Competenz, the Science Media Centre, Skycity, The Wine Portfolio and the Moa Brewing Company.
The awards will be announced at a gala dinner in Auckland on Friday, May 22.
